building a safer, mentally healthier construction industry

The evolving landscape of workplace mental health means it is becoming more important for organisations to manage the work-related factors (psychosocial hazards) that can act as barriers to worker wellbeing.

In partnership with the Construction Training Fund WA, APS has developed a series of psychosocial risk management training courses, designed to equip participants with the skills to identify, address and manage psychosocial hazards and risks in the construction environment to create safer, mentally healthier workplaces.

Our programs are free of charge for eligible employers, construction workers and apprentices in WA.

psychosocial leadership

Designed for leaders and small business owners, this program aims to build the confidence and capability of participants to positively influence not just mental health but enhance performance outcomes through improving people's overall experience of work. The program will build participants' knowledge and awareness around how to identify, recognise and manage psychosocial hazards. It aims to position leaders as the "first line of defence"  when it comes to addressing work-related barriers to wellbeing (psychosocial hazards) and providing support to those who may be vulnerable due to mental ill-health. The session will also introduce participants to a practical early-intervention framework to empower leaders to be proactive in intervening when they observe that "work isn't working" or team members are experiencing compromised mental health.

introduction to psychosocial risk

Designed for employees, contractors and apprentices, this program will introduce workers to psychosocial factors in the construction environment and how they can influence our experience of work, both positively and negatively. Content will explore how to identify and report psychosocial hazards when they are acting as barriers to wellbeing including escalation and support pathways to manage psychosocial hazards. This course will also introduce participants to a framework for having wellbeing conversations, building confidence to support self and others when "work isn't working" or when they are experiencing compromised mental health.
